Name That Baby!

As difficult as it is for most people to believe or understand, we did not find out the gender of any of our children.

There are so few out of this world, exciting surprises like hearing the doctor say " It's a .....!"

Three pregnancies meant coming up with at least six baby names that we could both agree on. Not an easy task for two stubborn folks like myself and Big Yankee. We usually went in with a "narrowed down" list of four names.

Being a teacher, I had many name aversions and we DID NOT want an overly popular name. Middle names were a bit easier as we use family names of significance.

Some of the names we considered have become increasingly popular. While I am thrilled to confirm my fabulous taste, I am also glad that we didn't end up using a trendy name.

In no particular order, here are a few of the names we considered:

Presley (girl)

Keegan

Quincy

Emerson/Emery

Merridy

Delaney

Taryn

Brody

Parker

Griffin

Good thing you're not married to my hubby--he wouldn't have gone for ANY of these!! :) I like Emerson and Presley.

Thanks! I find that most men need some education in choosing baby names. Mine suggested Jennifer with first child...a fine name for a child of the 70s who wants to be one of 4 Jennifers in her class.

I like all those names! I have always liked unusual names, but we did not make the decision until we actually *saw* our kids. Then I knew right away that it had to be Pauline and Marius.

(Thanks for your comment on my blog. Larry is a really great guy. One of his sons lives in Vancouver and everytime he drives down there he goes out of his way to stop by the German bakery and bring me some German goodies. I know, right?!)

Great names! I like Merridy. I also had a lot of name aversions as a teacher. Though many weren't names we'd have chosen anyway, as I used to teach ESL. LOL

Emerson is a vastly underrated name!

Thanks! One of the reasons we went in with a short list is because we needed to "see" them and see if the name fits.

Larry and his sons sound grand.

Thanks. I met a Merridy in a college Bio class one summer and she was sweet and bubble and funny and i'd never heard it before. Now with the movie Brave and Merrida it will probably be on the baby name radar.

It most certainly is! We didn't end up using it but some friends did and it fits her perfectly.

Names are so much fun and yours are wildly creative. My daughter wants to name her child Avery...I can't help but think of binders and sticky labels every time she says that.

Coming up with names would result in a major fight in our home! We were lucky that our dog already came with a name, but it's so much harder for a child! =)

I familiar wit teacher name aversions!!
And of course you're my twin. You would have a Brody!! (Which I took from a BMW commercial two days before I had him. There was a Farrago in the commercial also which was why I saw it).

Thanks! Avery use to be on my list of names too but it's a little too popular for my tastes now...an of course there are no more babies in my future. Name association is funny isn't it? Now I will be thinking of office supplies when I hear the name Avery.

Of all these names, I only know a Parker and a Delaney. Maybe I haven't met all the trends.

You should have gone with Taryn:)

I love this list. My favorite is Delaney. I wanted a Delaney so badly that I named one of the main characters in the book I am writing that. My last name sounds really Italian and since I am Italian (hubby is not), we went with Italian names. We had the hardest time because I was a teacher, too.

I bet you did have a lot of name aversions! My husband is a fourth so we had constant controversy over whether we would birth a "fifth". Thankfully we never had to have that brouhaha since we had girls. Ellen

Adorable names! It's a good thing we had boys cause we only settled on one girl name together. Both times... it was the same name lol

It is amusing to me how working in education can influence the name choice when it comes time to populate a room yourself. Lil Duck's father and I both worked in education when I became pregnant. It factored in quite a bit in our name selection. Although working in an ethnically weighted area of the city that made US the minority...it was pretty easy to rule out the Tequila and Immastar names we ran across.

Robbie K said...

It is! There were name I loved but linked to some VERY VERY challenging students. I was in the minority with my last pregnancy so it made it a little easier in that I was definitley not going to name a daughter Unique.

Robbie K said...

It was definitely a challenge but I love the names we ended up with!

I bet you are familiar with those aversions! I only knew one Brody at the time and he was an absolute doll..a son of my friend so I couldn't USE the same name. But it is still one of my very favorites!

in my experience some naming trends are very regional. The ones on my list were actually quite unique at the time where we were living.

It's a good one isn't it? I bet she hasn't come across many other Taryns? A friend of mine had older twin sisters and one of the was Taryn. I loved it.

Love that you used Delaney in your book :)

It's hard when you have to take into consideration how it sounds with your last name and of course with the other kids names.

Controversy avoided! :)

lol...so I take it ya'll have a harder time with girl names?
