Soap Box

My FaceBook post on Thanksgiving Eve because I was tired of my feed being blown up by certain things.

Contrary to popular belief, retail and health care workers aren't the only ones who work holidays. Big Yankee has worked nearly every Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's/Easter/etc since before we were even married. Working in social service and teaching I've worked my fair share of Christmas & New Year's Eves! What do you say we extend some compassion for EVERYONE who is working the holidays and to their loved ones who are effected? Let's go one step further and include all those who aren't spending it with those they love.

I worked in Hydroponic vegetables for two years. The only holidays we got were Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. To get those days we would have to start at 5am the day prior and work until 5pm.

There are always trade offs aren't there? I hope you weren't too exhausted to enjoy your time off.

While I certainly understand a bit of outrage from the retail-working-community, the whole thing just boggles my mind. Public safety, utilities, transportation, healthcare, amenities . . . so many different areas where people HAVE to work, lest the public be put into jeopardy. The outrage over retail workers . . . well, I find it amusing.

YES! Everybody deserves recognition for their work!!! I do think that the earlier hours for Black Friday each year are ridiculous but the people who dedicate their lives to public service deserve so much recognition!

My husband isn't in an industry that NEEDS to be open due to public safety but he works in a job that NEVER sleeps. It is open 24/7 every day of the year.
