How I Met Your Father's Mother

If you don't know Mama Kat you should! Not only is she a fabulous blogger and vlogger but she also provides the masses with weekly writing prompts. It's been awhile since I've been able to participate so I am thrilled to be sharing the story of how I met my future mother-in-law.

So I met this guy-Big Yankee -at a bar named after a diseased dog. Yes I really did. Oklahoma oozes classiness I tell ya.

You can read the first installment of his version here.

My first words to him were sarcastic and mean. And he has been in love with me ever since. Ok, so it's possible I left out some of the specifics. One of these days I will share all the sordid details of our meeting, but for now. I'm just telling you what you need to know.

We met at a bar in May. In June, he just happened to drive 1150 miles to visit a friend from high school so he thought he would "stop in and visit." When August rolled around, I hopped on a plane to Salt Lake City to pay him a visit and because I was lured (You do not get lured. Women do not get lured. ~Bull Durham)there for a Vegas vacation.

At some point he probably mentioned his mom would also be visiting Salt Lake and that I would be meeting her. It's just not information I chose to retain..what with perfecting my tan and planning my Vegas wardrobe, I couldn't be bothered with the technicalities.

I don't remember being nervous. To be honest, I hadn't even begun to think about a future with him. Long term and commitment weren't in my vocabulary. Not on my radar. He was a guy I met at a bar and we were having fun. In my mind, his mother just happened to be flying from New York to Salt Lake City for work and to visit her oldest son. Our visits overlapped by a day so we got together.

They had lived in Salt Lake City area in the late 70s and 80s so we did the old home tour..going back to various stomping grounds of days gone by. They reminisced and I learned some family history. I remember eating lunch at Marie Callender's and walking the grounds of the MTC (Missionary Training Center). Perhaps it was a bit of foreshadowing when we visited the breathtakingly beautiful Bridal Veil Falls. We trekked to Park City to dine on some mexican food and ride the Alpine Slide. This was probably the most terrifying part of the trip-given my fear of heights and all.

And that's the story of my first encounter with the woman who would become my mother-in-law four short years later.
