First Time Ever

Bridget is one of those idea havers and suggested this week's topic for Monday Listicles. It's a list of FIRSTS and I'm giving a shout out to my husband who I haven't seen much of  in recent days.

1. First time I saw Big Yankee- He was playing pool in a bar and called me over on my way to the bathroom.

2. First thing I said to him: You know how I know you are lying? Your lips are moving.

3. First time he called me: I was on my way to the movies with a friend. I had forgotten his name so I called him Utah Man.

4. First time I realized he lived 1165 miles away: When I saw caller ID said Salt Lake City.

5. First "date": He came back a few weeks later to visit me under the guise of visiting a high school friend who lived in the same state. We went to penny beer at the bar where we met and I wouldn't let him hold my hand.

6. First Vacation: We went to Vegas during the first trip I made out to Utah. I kept confusing Las Vegas and Los Angeles since I had never been to either. I had also fallen down and sprained my ankle while carrying a three year old. My legs were super unsexy with cuts and bruises and scabs on my knees as if I was learning to ride a bike.

7. First (and only) time Big Yankee proposed: Thanksgiving Weekend 1998 in Palm Springs, Ca.

8. First Time we were in a car accident together: It was July 5, 1999 and we were on our honeymoon. We were driving through Sandwich, Massachusetts when we were rear ended and driven into a tree. Our rental car was totaled and we spent about six hours at a Dunkin Donuts next to the Sandwich Police Department waiting for a new rental car out of Boston. This is pre-cell phone, laptops etc. It's as miserable as it sounds.

9. First place we lived together: We fondly called it the one room shanty. It was a studio apartment in the desert wastelands of California. The owner of the convenient store behind our complex was stabbed one night while I was home alone.

10. First time we lived apart while married: In October 2010 he moved two hours south for a job and we saw each other most weekends. We were under the same roof for nearly a month in June 2011 and survived a month long road trip with three children in July. We lived apart again until Memorial Day 2012.

That stabbing must have been terrifying! A month long road trip with kids...wow. I'm impressed.

I want to know the first thing he said to you to make you say he was lying! :) That's a lot of time apart. We did the commuter dating for many years, and that was rough. I don't want to imagine living apart so much after marriage, especially with kids.

A romantic story listicle...although the stabbing part was less so.

He must have really been working the pick up lines that first night. But sounds like he did something right! ;)

You have a lot of stories together. Glad you are reunited in living space!

Was he really lying? If so about what? You can't leave us all hanging like that!! Not fair!

WOW! That stabbing is insane! So is your honeymoon car accident. Yikes! Great list!

Great list Robbie! I love the way you focused the topic, so fun!

ARgh, the honeymoon crash sounds excruciating. Glad you weren't hurt, at least!

I like the angle you took this list. It reveals so much in the little snippets you shared. Great list. Erin

I love the way you dedicated this list to your hubby! You have spent a lot of time apart--how do you stand it?

It was crazy. I hadn't lived in California very long and the only person I knew was my then boyfriend. I heard helicopters and sirens and wondered wth was happening.

Robbie K said...

He said he was from New York which I had a very hard time believing since I was from New York as well and yet we were in a bar in Oklahoma. The commuter thing SUCKED but most of our dating was long distance too.

Robbie K said...

Thanks. It's hard to make a stabbing romantic isn't it?

Robbie K said...

I was in a man hatin' phase when I met him and combine that with my smart assery and he really didn't stand a chance.

Robbie K said...

Thanks! We are glad to be reunited too...and now I'm singing reunited and it feels so good...

Robbie K said...

No he wasn't lying. He said he was from New York which I thought was bs since I was born in NY and we were standing in a bar in Oklahoma. Turns out his dad grew up not too far from some of my family. I thought he was lying b/c they are such tiny towns that most ppl have never even heard of.

Robbie K said...

needless to say we started looking for a new place to live right after the stabbing.

Robbie K said...

Thanks. I figure Big Yankee deserves a shout out every once in awhile :) He puts up with me after all.

Robbie K said...

It was intense...and then my wallet was stolen. But we still enjoyed our honeymoon :)

Robbie K said...

Thanks Erin :)

Thank you-I figured he deserves some recognition. We spent most of our dating life living far apart so we were sorta use to it. Commuter marriage was beyond difficult...and the reason I started this blog :)

Wow, long distance marriage - that's hard! I wanna know what lies he was telling you. ;)

What a lovely list to dedicate to your husband. Your honeymoon sounds like it was quite the adventure! Glad you were uninjured, but 6 hours stuck in a coffee shop doesn't sound like much fun.

Cool spin on the topic! Living apart must have been really hard, I kmow I would have hated it.

So how many donuts did you eat while waiting for rescue? ;-)

What a cute list! I can't imagine how hard it is to live apart

Robbie K said...

He's a man--he's always lying! :)

No--I had just gotten out of a bad relationship where I was being lied to so I was a bit of a man hater.

Robbie K said...

It was quite the adventure but we made the best of it. It makes for an interesting story to tell.

Robbie K said...

Thanks. Living apart was even harder than I thought it would be!

Oddly enough I didn't eat ANY donuts b/c at the time I didn't like them. That has changed and we have donuts every Sunday :)

Robbie K said...

It was harder than I could have ever imagined. If we hadn't lived apart I probably never would have started blogging so at least some good came out of it :)

I love a good love story. And apartments are always next to a store where bad things go down, aren't they?
