Looking Back

It's strange to think back to a year ago at this time. My world was turned upside down. My husband lived 1200+ miles away and I was struggling to stay afloat as a solo parent. I was ten or 11 weeks in at this point-unsure of how long we would be living apart this time. I never in my wildest dreams imagined it would be nearly ten months before we would live under one roof again. I'd been laid off from my teaching job at the end of May so my job was gone too. It was both a blessing and a curse.

I consider October 2011 to be the official start of my blogging. I'd fired off a post here or there in the previous year but it was October that I started posting consistently. I had NO idea what I was doing. I just started pounding away at the keyboard--or perhaps pecking away in my case-and hit publish. I held my breathe and waited for readers to magically appear. When that didn't happen I rediscovered Twitter and a whole new world opened up. I was oblivious to the enormity of the blogosphere. I didn't have a clue what a link-up was or how they worked. Did you have to be invited? Did you have to apply?

And with that the timer goes off.

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules…
  • Set a timer and write for 5 minutes.
  • Write an intro to the post if you want but don’t edit the post. No proofreading or spellchecking. This is writing in the raw.
  • Publish it somewhere. Anywhere. The back door to your blog if you want. But make it accessible.
  • Add the Stream of Consciousness Sunday badge to your post (in the sidebar). .
  • Link up your post here.
  • Visit your fellow bloggers and show some love.

I paid for my very first blog hop. Can you believe it. I was that naive. It was $3 but I met a blogger who I consider to be a really good friend through that hop and that hasn't happened with any of the free ones. I also consider myself "consistent" as of October 2011. My blog url used to be called sporadicpublication.blogspot.com How about that!?

I "opened" my blog and then didn't put up a post until TWO years later, when I broke my foot. I'm having fun now and wish I'd started sooner! You're right, Twitter is huge.

it took me several months to write, and even more to be consistent. i love having a place to both dump my thoughts AND document for my kids. its a new age baby book, of sorts.

Wandered by from SOC Sunday ...

I've been blogging since 2006 - sometimes rabidly, often (of late) sporadically. I use it as a soapbox, a journal, and a substitute therapist.

I don't know that anyone cares for / about what I write - but I know that it's become an important part of my life.

I agree with Julie - I don't know that a lot of people care what I write, but it is nice to be able to do it.

Congrats on one full year of official blogging!

I've been blogging for over a decade, but I've had many periods of time when I posted only sporadically (sometimes VERY sporadically). My blog has come to be very important to me in recent years, and I devote quite a bit of time to it now... it no longer feels like just a hobby to me.

Blogging regularly does take discipline -- but it is really great when you start to feel part of community. Glad you are back together as a family.

Stream of Consciousness Sunday is a great idea! I'll have to play along one of these days... Funny, October 2011 is when I got really serious with my blog too, moving to writing daily.

I can't imagine solo parenting for so long. I don't know how people do it without losing their minds...

I couldn't figure out how to add the linky button to my first lin up. I'm pretty sure I cried.

It took me two or three months of consistent blogging before I finally realized that I was going to have to venture out into the great big scary blogosphere (I was clueless too) if I ever wanted anyone other than my immediate family members and closest friends to read my blog! I've been at it for two and a half years now and have no idea what I did with my time before I started.
